Background

A multi-line specialty MGA, competing through brokers.

Helix Underwriting Partners is a multi-line specialty MGA operating across the US, UK, and Bermuda. Within its business, Helix’s Property underwriting operations manage property submissions ranging in size from $10m to $100’s of billions. Helix takes a 1Helix approach to sharing risk data across its three underwriting entities via one dedicated underwriting platform, and works exclusively through third-party brokers in Bermuda, London and the US to compete for complex, highly competitive property risks.

The challenge

In property markets, speed determines outcomes.

Multiple markets often quote the same risk, and the first credible response frequently wins the deal.

For Helix’s Property underwriting team, that pressure is constant. Submissions surge around renewal deadlines, sharply compressing already narrow timelines. Underwriters must quickly assess fit, prioritize opportunities, and respond to brokers, sometimes within hours, while managing volume across regions.

At the same time, submissions arrive by email and typically include a mix of PDFs, spreadsheets, SOVs, and narrative documents, each structured according to a broker’s own approach. Before underwriting can begin, this information must be interpreted, validated, and entered into internal systems.

That manual work sat directly in the critical path. It delayed broker responses and pulled underwriters into administrative tasks at the moments they needed to focus on judgment, pricing, and engagement. As Helix scaled across regions, this friction increasingly constrained how quickly the team could compete, particularly during peak periods.

The solution

Friction removed. Nothing else changed.

Helix introduced Brisc’s Submissions Analyst to remove manual friction in the submissions intake workflow, without changing how brokers submit business or how underwriters operate.

The results

What changed for the underwriting desk.

~80% reduction in manual submission work

Across submission intake, file review, and data entry, Brisc eliminated the majority of the administrative effort that previously sat in the critical path. Instead of reviewing files and rekeying data, underwriters now begin with structured submissions ready for evaluation.

“The beauty of Brisc was taking about 80% of the manual labour away, so [we] can focus on underwriting instead of data entry.”
Nik LuckingManaging Partner, Helix Underwriting Partners
